Weird...

I'm really wondering what I'm doing in an "online" sense now. I have a blog, a twitter account, email, web and *nix powers, but what I have I done with them. More importantly what should I do with them? Rhetorical for the blog of course because here I am...

The most prolific blogger I know (in real life) tends to write about what he was doing in a day, things he's done or will do, thoughts on this or that. Same with most Twitter postings I've bothered to look at. First I'll admit that I haven't tried to read many tweets, but I use Slashdot like Twitter in a sense. But what I am doing? Other than practicing my rhetorical questions? When I try and start a rhythm going with daily posts I tend to write about meta issues, a sort of Sienfeld of blog posts, a blog about thoughts about blogs, endless self referential loops that eventually just peter out. Kind of like modern culture. Huh - talked myself into the mainstream. I'm the everyman, talking about talking about nothing, endless repeats and references. Yes I do get the irony that I am the one seemingly decrying pop culture references. I am the one with a Simpson's or Futurama quote at the ready. I'm not applying morality to the our-culture-is-a-self-referencing-house-of-mirrors, but I can't see it as being entirely wholesome either.

This is the sort of thing that will cause people to rise up and cast of the shackles of their oppressive machines, machines made in their own image, in a kind of Butlerian Jihad... And yet I can't keep from referencing something somewhere. It must be a crutch, a bad habit that I've developed over the years, that if I can't tie something I say to something that's come before it can't be good. That kind of ideology doesn't stand up - it doesn't make logical sense. I would hope that I could one day make something that isn't embedded in what came before - a wholly new thing, a creation I can point to and say "I thought of that. I was the first one and I can prove it." Yes it's wishful thinking, but apparently that helps you live longer. Not sure about stream-of-consciousness writing though. Not many studies there. Don't know too many people that do it, although my sister's boyfriend really does an excellent job with the ol' Facebook status updates. I'm more of a "open the faucet and let's see what comes out" rather than a couple of words slapped together, held only by a tenuous 'now' association... Even my gibberish is getting sloppy now - better move on.

Let's pretend that last paragraph didn't happen (if you didn't skip to here, I can't really take back that last paragraph. You've read it, you can't unread it... And don't bother trying it's too messy). Many have predicted "have and have-nots" future, with some sort of technology separating the two groups. Money used to be the easiest and most visible, but communication and computers has been a popular sci-fi theme in the past. It really seems like it is approaching, although there may be some different ways to classify people. Right now, the vast interconnectedness - searchable interconnectedness - provides tremendous benefits. The "always-on" society isn't really a burden, it's an analogy for humans that can communicate in parallel with what they're doing. Think of Twitter - you shout to the ether every time you start a task. Almost like you're a lawyer making notes in your log book for billing purposes. The act of communicating isn't really an act or effort - it's a side effect. But there are tremendous potential problems. The biggest is with power.

Electricity is the one thing I've been worried about being without for any length of time. It's the fungible energy and it makes all the fun things work. For me those things don't have to be connected to other people but whatever. People (and their homes) are starting to get to the point where they don't work right if there is no power. The techno-haves can't really operate without electricity. Many are helpless when the machines don't work. The article I read about trivia games and the internet become more clear - people don't have to remember things so they won't. If they can look it up online, it's good enough. I know I've said similar things in the past, but the problem is how to evaluate the information. It makes the most sense to put this in a social context.

Let's pretend that you weren't using a computer to find out the answer to a question, you could only talk to people. People who weren't using computers... *sigh* Anyway, you ask the same question, possibly in slightly different ways, and then you gather the responses and come up with an answer. If you are wise, you solicit several answers, hopefully from people you trust, and look for the common answers. The value of the response is based on your trust of the source and your knowledge about them. You can also evaluate the response to the particular question by watching and listening carefully to the answers given. Similarly, if you don't have an internal knowledge core, how can you possibly evaluate answers discovered on the Internet. Simply looking for the most common answer is a perversion of the "wisdom of crowds" idea. Playing games with internet search engine results started shortly after money was mentioned in the context of the internet. The "wisdom of crowds" idea works, much like free market capitalism, in a largely bias free environment.

So? Well, you've read this far (I'm impressed - I only read this far because I'm writing it. I didn't really edit it), so I should tie these threads together. The bias toward technology and always-on-communication can go to far, creating an insulated self-referential world that becomes your entire culture. This would be a "bad thing". Learn to operate without. That is a sentence and I believe it, rotund technoman that I am. Balance is elusive be one should seek it. Balance between operating with and without, connected and not, electricity or no.

Maybe tomorrow the diatribe will be better. Coherent. Brief. Illuminating. Less self-referential (doubtful).

Day 8 Really?

It's day 8 in the habit-forming department.  I know I feel better knowing that.  Well, maybe not - but whatever.  I'm here now, I might as well write about something... Something topical, ... in the news... GM!  Just saw a little something about the Chevy Volt.  Some guys from the NBC got to take the test-mule out for a drive.  They seemed impressed in a muted way.  So far, that project has been proceeding how I hoped it would.  It's taking a bit longer than I thought it might, but I guess there are many things that have to be considered when creating a whole new infrastructure.  Saw something from gm-volt.com - they referenced the NBC site, plus have lots of other info on the Volt.

This was the vehicle I always thought the Prius was, until I found out more.  The Prius has a big battery, but it doesn't have enough juice to run very long on straight electron power.  Once I heard that, I wasn't interested in the Prius at all.  When GM hinted they would make a series hybrid - one where the electric motors move the car and any engine is used to generate electricity - I began watching with great interest.  I guess the biggest disappointment with the whole project so far is that if GM had kept the EV1 project alive, they would have had the incremental engineering improvements that only come from tinkering with production models.  I took an electronics shop class in high school, and the teacher was an electrical engineer who used to work for GM.  He told us that one of his first jobs in Detroit was helping to test an electric Cavalier in the early 80s, if I remember correctly.  I think I remember seeing something about Henry Ford tinkering with an electric Model T at one point.  The problem has always been with the battery storage systems.

Another interesting tech-bit I saw recently was on the development of hybrid lead-acid/ultra-capacitor batteries.  That's the kind of thing that could lead to interesting things for me.  Like nice buffering systems between a wind/solar generation system and my home.  The ultracapcitor part makes the battery suitable for the high-voltage operations that occur when generating wind power and are neccessary for handling electrical grid changes.  For stationary applications, this technology will bring the cost of such systems down, as they are about 1/4 the cost per Watt of NiMH batteries, which are cheaper than Lithium-Ion batteries.  Which the Volt uses.  On a hybrid, the rapid charge/release cycles used in acceleration and regenerative braking make normal lead-acide (ie. car batteries) unsuitable.  Lithium-Ion and NiMH can store/release energy quickly, with Lithium-Ion having the higher storage density.  Lead acid technology is cheap, and combining them with some ultracapictor techonology provides the rapid charge/release capability for a small additional cost.  I would love to have a solar system that charges are large battery pack that I can use to power my furnace and computer when the power goes out.  

Anyway, I'm still interested in the Chevy Volt, although there will be about 2.5 years until I could possibly own one.  And it sounds like those expensive batteries will make it pretty expensive, so that's less appealing.  On the other hand, I wouldn't mind being part of something that changes the way vehicles operate.

Microsoft and your TV

There was a small announcement from CES the other day regarding Microsoft and the Xbox 360. They indicated that the 360 would be capable of doing IPTV soon. Basically that MS will be integrating set-top features into the 360, just not over your cable.

When MS first announced the Xbox, I told all those who would listen (and there weren't many of them... I didn't have a blog then so my statements are date-stamped) that MS was going to use this as a stepping stone to supplant cable companies. And I thought they were taking an excellent route. What was that path? The same pattern as early PCs - follow the games. In this case, create a game-first system and then leverage that later when it gains a high penetration. Heck, throw money at it, lose billions now for gain later. I believed at the time that MS was hedging its PC position with an ubiquitous device that blends in with other living-room items. They would use their proven technique of "get it out there and iterate towards the best product."

So far this has been keeping with that idea. They still use an x86 processor (their strength) in their device, the second gen is better than the first, the UI is continually improving and, importantly, they have embraced something that caused them to stumble on the PC: the Internet.

Making the device usable by non-PC-experts was the first step. Creating a platform where they control the OS and hardware was the next. Making it network accessible is the last - now they can start using this platform for other things like delivering services. Services like "TV".

Sure their initial offerings will probably suck, but over time they will get better. Eventually the service will be so good that a few people will try it and realize that it seamlessly provides things they never knew they needed. They'll casually mention it to other people they know and soon everyone will "discover" the cable-tv service in their gaming device. Then people will decide they don't need "extra boxes" and just get the Xbox Whatever instead. Just like with DVD and HD-DVD now - why pay more for a standalone device when you can get a great gaming platform plus an HD-DVD for less than an HD-DVD player!

What's my point? I think that the cable companies (particularly the ones who I work for) should pay close attention to this and prepare to meet it. It's going under the radar of the cable companies because of the "game console" guise. If MS can deploy something compelling to that install base... There is still time left - who knows how long it will take MS to complete this idea. But they will complete it and the form it will take is unknown.

Chevrolet Volt

Sweet! Looks like GM is going to make a car that I'd buy. Maybe I'll be able to afford it when it's available - 2012. That's 5 years and in line with how much longer I'd like to make my current cars last.

The car is a full electric car with a combustion engine that acts as a generator. It can be plugged into 110 V outlets for 6-6.5 hours charging, at which point the batteries have a range of about 64 km. When the charge gets low, the generator kicks in. Full tank plus full charge give a range of about 1000 km - just like my diesel New Beetle. Check here for the specs.

Guess that "Who Killed the Electric Car?" documentary kicked GM in the butt during the last Detroit Auto Show. They said they began work on the Volt after the 2006 show. Looks like they may actually be able to make something useful in a short period again. We'll have to see what else is going on in 5 years, but so far this is the most intriguing item I've seen in a long time. Other than some nice direct-from-Europe diesels that are on the way.

Internet predictions from 1995

I remember the Internet in 1995. I was there, working, learning, building the inter-weeb. Yes, still a young pup, who learned his first Unix in 1992, I was deep in the ISP trenches in 1995. Some of these predictions are pretty amusing. But what I'm happiest about right now is that the following didn't come to pass:

Predictions:

  • Within the next three years, everyone from AT& T to Sony to your cable company will offer on-line dating, electronic gambling, video on demand, and role-playing games via a set-top box. That's the Information Superhighway everyone wants!
  • In five years, prices on those set-top boxes will drop dramatically as vendors learn that their services are way too expensive and that people don't like getting information from their TVs. Ever heard of VideoTex? No? My point exactly.
  • In five-and-a-half years, when people still aren't buying set-top boxes, vendors will realize that it wasn't because of high prices, rather that people don't want to gamble, date, or watch videos "on demand."
  • The Information Superhighway as delivered via set-top boxes will die forever; a good idea gone awry (gone the way of Betamax); unless someone figures out what people really want, such as the ability to search reference works, participate in distance learning, search the holdings at the local library, and practice electronic democracy.
  • None of the set-top cable services will ever replace the Internet.

Rear-window science

New Scientist has another neat blurb on some new research. It's the oh-so-popular "carbon nanotube" again. This time, some group has created a paint with carbon nanotubes in it and then pass a current through the "paint". Since the tubes conduct electricity, this produces heat. Not only that, it produces an even heat through the entire paint. And a thin layer of the paint is transparent. This paint would replace the heating wires in car windows while providing a cool-looking tint. A thicker layer (which would be opaque) could be used as in-floor (or in-wall, in ceiling in-whatever) heating. The great thing about it is that there are no wires to break so the conductivity is spread very evenly.

Think of the home reno with that: "new tile floor... uh, did you want in-floor heating? Okay, just gotta fetch the other bucket. " Or "Gonna seal that driveway for you... did you want it to be self-cleaning for ice and snow? Okay, let me get the other bucket." This is something that I can't recall very often from science-fiction - technology that is paint-on. I've seen an announcement of a paint-on solar panel, but it isn't commercialized yet. Same idea as this though - some new kind of nano-scale material that can be applied like a paint.

vCJD help at last!

vCJD (variantCreutzfeld-Jacob Disease) is a pretty horrible disease. It is a series of tiny protein fragments that can pass through your entire body, gathering in your brain and basically destroying it. This is also known as "mad cow disease".

The tiny protein fragments are called "prions". Prions aren't virii, bacteria or yeast, but a non-living form of infectious agent that is very difficult to get rid of. In the spectrum described above, yeast (a type of fungi) is "alive". It has a nucleus, organelles (like mitochondria) and a membrane. Next is bacteria, which is single celled, no organelles or nucleus, but still considered "alive". A virus is a non-living agent - it has an exterior shell and DNA inside, but it has no internal mechanisms. It cannot move or reproduce on its own, but it uses living cells to reproduce. This makes it a sort of half-alive entity. More like a machine that is activated when it contacts the appropriate cells. Prions are even less like living cells than a virus.

A virus contains genetic material, RNA or DNA, with a protein casing. The casing protects the genetic material until it can hijack a living cell and use it to reproduce. A prion lacks the genetic material - somehow it is able to change certain proteins into itself, without using other means. The exact mechanism is actually not understood.

However the GOOD NEWS is that someone has discovered a treatment for this disease! Researchers were able to develop a blood filtering process that is capable of pulling out the bad prions from the blood. This is by far the best news for any sufferer of vCJD or mad cow disease. I hope the process will proceed to commercial approval so that it will be available as a treatment.

Edit (2006-12-31): A helpful commenter pointed out that this is not a treatment for vCJD, but rather something that will make blood transfusions safer. The prions are removed from human blood by the process, which is still a tremendous step for the disease. I suspect that it would be used as part of a treatment for someone with vCJD, by filtering their own blood. So little is still known that it may make no difference.

Inukshuk Wireless Broadband

A work colleague, who happens to live outside of London, told me about a new service he's trying out. You see he lives in the country where the cable doesn't go and DSL doesn't stretch so in spite of the fact that he is a computer professional it is difficult to obtain broadband Internet access.

Up until now, he had one practical choice: Execulink Wireless Internet. This is a line-of-site "terrestrial microwave" service. I actually know of two people at work that have used this service. Provides about 60 KB/s down and 20 KB/s up so it is better than dialup, but that's about all you can say. And that's under good conditions. My colleague was experiencing intermittent service - dropped connections, bad throughput etcetera, and inquired with Execulink technical support. They discovered a rival service had setup a new tower between Exculink's tower and my colleague's home. Not sure what service it was, but it could possibly be High Speed Anywhere.

The more interesting information that he got both a flyer from the new provider and also a call from Rogers offering him their new Roger's Portable Internet service. This a 1.5 Mbps down, 256 Kbps up service (187 KB/s down, 30 KB/s up) that is installed on cellular towers. I was intrigued by this and started looking into it further. This is the fruits of a joint venture between Rogers and Bell called Inukshuk, which aims to provide broadband access to the under served rural areas. Their site calls their network "pre-WiMAX", but the important thing is that it is non-line-of-sight. Plus the intention is to add transceivers to existing cellular towers owned by both Rogers and Bell with both companies supplying the actual Internet service. Bell's service is called Sympatico Unplugged.

I thought this sounded great - getting the companies with the cellular towers involved was excellent and we can keep the broadband Internet access more available. My parents live on a small stretch of gravel road, within ~2 km of the nearest cable line and too far for DSL. They cannot even get broadband access (except satellite) at their house, but this is very hopeful. Rogers is starting to offer service in the London, ON area, so they are or will be within range soon. Though I think their 286 will need a RAM upgrade from 1MB...

I'm also hopeful that the service may upgrade to WiMAX soon because Intel is pushing hard to include WiMAX capable radios in their laptop wireless chipsets. That would translate to being able to buy a 1.5 Mbps/256 Kbps service for $50/month that works pretty much anywhere in Canada. Including off at Dale's farm or my parent's house, or Kelowna. Now that would be cool.

Samsung's Month-long laptop

Samsung is getting closer to creating a practical fuel cell for laptops. They have created a methanol-based laptop doc that store enough fuel for 12,000 Wh. Using the right laptop, they estimate you could go 1 month without refueling.

I know this isn't ideal - it isn't a nice internal fuel cell conveniently replacing the battery in your laptop, but it is progress. The article I linked above indicates that the system produces about 20 Watts peak output, but that is just fine for a small notebook. And they aren't pretending that this is something that you take on the train or bus with you - it is a docking station. Great for that island cottage or remote wilderness getaway.
